Facebook is hiring 1,000 new employees for new roles in London over the course of 2020.

More than half the jobs will be tech-focused positions, while other positions will be opened for Facebook’s online curation. The job additions will bring the total number of Facebook employees in the UK to over 4,000. One factor driving this round of hiring is increased pressure to tackle online extremism and other inflammatory content. Many of these job additions will be towards Facebook’s “community integrity” team. This is the wing of Facebook responsible for regulating content on Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram.

Facebook has also come under pressure in the UK over the suicide of Molly Russel, a teenager who was 14 at the time. “The tragic death of Molly Russell made us really stop in our tracks as a company and acknowledge that there was an issue that we need to do more on,” explained Steve Hatch, Facebook’s Director for the UK and Ireland. “As systems get better they develop, they get better and more effective, our aspiration is to remove every single piece of [harmful] content,” he went on. According to Hatch, Facebook has removed over 2 million posts in the UK and Ireland.

Facebook CFO Sheryl Sandberg personally announced the new jobs in London yesterday evening.
