Solo: A Star Wars Box Office Disappointment

Solo: A Star Wars Story was projected to bring in over 140 million dollars domestically at the box office over this Memorial Day weekend. In reality, it only eclipsed $103 million, failing to reach the heights of Disney’s previous Star Wars installments including The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

On the plus side, $14.1 million was made on the Thursday night preview of the film, which broke records for pre-Memorial Day weekend box office totals, but that still was not enough to lift the latest Star Wars installment into its projected sales goal.

If the total earnings are adjusted for inflation, it is sadly stated that Solo is the lowest opening for a Star Wars movie ever.

Internationally, the film made 65 million dollars, which is where the film had a chance to redeem itself. Unfortunately, the second largest movie market in the world, China, opened the film to a mere $10.1 million, continuing the trend of the Chinese market largely ignoring the franchise.

Midway through production, director Ron Howard took over from previous directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller; although the total gross is a disappointing number for Disney and the Star Wars franchise, it was a personal high for Howards’s own work.
