‘The Grinch’ Premieres at $66 Million

At the end of its premiere weekend, Illumination Studios’ ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch’ has raked in an impressive box office profit of $66 million domestically, plus an additional $12.7 million from international screenings. The film’s premiere has beaten out many of Illumination’s other animated films, such as ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Hop’ and ‘Sing.’

‘The Grinch’ is already on the track to dethrone its spiritual predecessor, 2000’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ with Jim Carrey, which premiered at $55 million. ‘The Grinch’ has had an all-encompassing ad campaign, with the titular character appearing in previews, commercials, and physical advertising for the last several months. So far, it has outpaced the previous November box office winner, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ which premiered at $30.8 million. Interestingly, in a quality shared with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘The Grinch’ has received lukewarm reviews from many critics and film writers, but general audience engagement has been overall positive. Several theatergoers have said that they found the movie fun and didn’t pay any story foibles any mind.

‘The Grinch’ will likely face a challenger soon when Disney releases ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet,’ the sequel to 2012’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ on November 21st.
