Sears Set To Lay Off 250 Employees At HQ

The retail apocalypse hit Sears hard and the damage is still being done.

Sears cut 250 jobs at their corporate HQ in Hoffman Estates, Illinois last week. The retail chain plans on going through another round of closures at Sears and Kmart locations across the country before the end of the year. The coming downsizing was announced by Sears’ parent company, Transform Holdco, and further layoffs and closures can be expected, according to a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Transform Holdco bought Sears in February of this year, saving the retailer from near-certain liquidation. At that time, Sears had over 400 Sears and Kmart stores open for business. The company announced another round of store closures in early August, when it announced that another 26 locations will be closed before November. Most of these stores will be completely shut down by the end of the year, and liquidation is supposed to take place from September to December. According to Business Insider, at least 60 Sears locations have been closed, as confirmed by local media outlets.

When asked for comment, Sears told the publication “As we continue our transformation efforts, we are working closely with our stakeholders, and evaluating our network of stores, operations, and business strategy in order to stabilize the business and support a long-term path to profitable success.”
