Movies With Female Leads Are Making More Money

It seems that more films starring female leads will be on the horizon, as they appear make a good deal more money than movies with male leads.

According to a study conducted by Creative Artists Agency and shift7, between the years 2014 and 2017 films with female leads managed to secure more money on average than movies with male leads. These films ranged in budget from $10 million to $100 million. After looking at the box office records of 350 movies between these years, female led movies consistently outperformed much of the male led movies despite being the minority. This flies in the face of some of the old-school thinking in the film industry, namely that more people would buy tickets to movies with male leads. This signifies a distinct shift in how consumers and corporations may not be on the same wavelength, as there are still ten times more movies with male leads than female leads that are released every year.

Being that half of the overall population of the world is female, it makes sense that these movies would draw in just as much money, if not more. One of the biggest successes of the past few years is the Wonder Woman movie. That movie was the highest grossing superhero movie to date, outperforming expectations and changing the minds of superhero movie producers as to how their core audiences would react to a female lead. The study determined that it is, in fact, more profitable to have female characters top billed, and also recognized that films with people of color staring also made much more money on opening weekends.
