The rental company is seeking to electrify its wares.

In May of 2020, car rental company Hertz was forced to declare bankruptcy. As the COVID-19 pandemic ground travel to a halt and kept people at home, there was, unsurprisingly, an almost complete halt to vehicle rentals, gutting Hertz’s business. Thanks to a $5.9 billion refinancing effort courtesy of Knighthead Capital Management, Certares Management, and other investors, Hertz is back in the game, and to make themselves more appealing, they’re beginning to go renewable.

Today, Hertz announced that they had purchased 100,000 Tesla Model 3 sedans to bolster their rental vehicle fleet. All of these sedans will be available for rental in the United States and Europe starting next month. In addition to using the cars, anyone who rents one will be able to recharge them at a Tesla supercharger station. Hertz is also planning to install their own charging stations within their local networks.

Not only is this purchase a good look for Hertz, making efforts to embrace renewable vehicles, but it’s an incredible windfall for Tesla. This purchase features a price tag of roughly $4.2 billion in revenue for Tesla, making it the single largest electrical vehicle order ever made (so far).

“Electric vehicles are now mainstream, and we’ve only just begun to see rising global demand and interest,” Hertz’s interim CEO Mark Fields said in a statement. “The new Hertz is going to lead the way as a mobility company, starting with the largest EV rental fleet in North America and a commitment to grow our EV fleet and provide the best rental and recharging experience for leisure and business customers around the world.”

After this first major purchase, Hertz is planning to completely electrify all 500,000 vehicles in its fleet in the near future.
