Google Pledges $1 Billion Over Course Of Ten Years For Bay Area Housing

Google has announced a plan to add thousands of new homes to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Google has pledged to spend $1 billion over the course of the next decade to see the plan through.

California has been going through a serious problem with homelessness in its major urban centers. Skyrocketing rent costs are continuing to push thousands of residents onto the street as people resort to living in cars, tents, and any shelter they can find. The Bay Area of San Francisco is home to some of the highest property and rent prices in the US, and there has so far been no definitive solution to the problem of homelessness in the area.

San Francisco is famous for its rent prices as well as being the original home of Google. Many (former) residents of the Bay Area have expressed their hatred towards big tech, believing that the industry turned their former home into a palace for the rich, while leaving the poor behind. Google has been the subject of several protests, and the company’s friendly brand has taken a hit over the Bay Area housing crisis and other issues such as advertising policies.

Now, Google is offering $1 billion for a housing project to try to mitigate the alarming rate of homelessness in the Bay Area with the help of a giant check. Google CEO Sundar Pichai explains that “As we work to build a more helpful Google, we know our responsibility to help starts at home. For us, that means being a good neighbor in the place where it all began over 20 years ago: the San Francisco Bay Area,” in a blog post which was published on Tuesday. Google is one of the largest employers in the Bay Area, contributing to the sky-high rent costs. “First, over the next 10 years, we’ll repurpose at least $750 million of Google’s land, most of which is currently zoned for office or commercial space, as residential housing,” Pichai went on to explain.
