The new drink has 20% more caffeine.

As a part of their new offerings for the New Year, coffee and breakfast chain Dunkin’ announced several new varieties of their signature coffee. The major addition to the menu of this new trio of drinks is intended for those who want a greater burst of energy from their coffee.

Starting today, participating Dunkin’ locations will begin selling “Extra Charged Coffee,” a coffee drink with at least 20% more caffeine in it than their traditional blends, in both hot and iced versions. For a limited time, this drink will be available for $2 a cup.

“Let’s be honest, many of our plans and goals for 2020 got derailed,” Dunkin’ wrote on their official blog. “As we head into 2021, we could all use a little something extra to help us tackle our to-dos. If you’re looking for an extra boost to help get your morning started on the right foot, or keep you runnin’ throughout a busy day, we’ve got just the drink for you.”

The Extra Charged Coffee is made using green coffee extract, as opposed to the traditional caffeine-boosting method of adding a shot of espresso. The green coffee extract was chosen so the additional caffeine wouldn’t substantially change the coffee’s flavor profile.

In addition to the Extra Charged coffee, Dunkin’ is adding two new coffee blends to its menu for a limited time. The first, named “Dunkin Explorer Batch,” is a medium roast coffee with a flavor profile featuring “dark berry notes and a smoky finish,” according to Dunkin’.

The second blend, named “Dunkin’ Midnight,” is a dark roast coffee with “inherent sweetness and bold, chocolatey flavor notes.”

The first blend is the first entry in Dunkin’s new Limited Batch series of drinks, while the second will be taking the place of Dunkin’s regular dark roast on the menu.
