Do You Have the Time and Energy for a Side Hustle?

Money is nice, but only if you’ve got the energy for it.

Whether you just feel bored with your primary line of work or are in need of some extra cash, side hustles are a great way to diversify yourself and make some quick scratch in the process. Thing is, though, while probably not to the same extent as a full or part-time job, a side hustle is still work, and work demands an investment of time, energy, and possibly more from you. If you already come home from work every day dead on your feet, I guarantee a side hustle isn’t going to do anything for you.

According to a study conducted by the American Psychological Association, a wide majority of people feel significant stress or other negative emotions in their daily lives. Whether that’s due to current events or stuff they already put up with, I can’t say, but the point is that piling more work on top of work that’s already stressing you out is a recipe for a quick and messy burnout. Even if you think you have the time and energy available to make a side hustle work, you can’t really say that for certain without trying it.

Many side hustles have numerous hidden costs, both in the metaphorical and literal sense. For example, let’s say you wanted to take up knitting sweaters for an Etsy shop. Even if you’re good at knitting, you still have to sit and do nothing but that for hours on end to meet product demand, and that’s not even factoring in the cost of materials and shipping, not to mention the potential headaches of navigating a freelance system.

If you really need the cash or otherwise want to broaden your horizons, you can give a side hustle a try. But any money you might make isn’t worth ending every day feeling like a walking corpse.
