Halloween spooks millions of children every year, but it also spooks a lot of wallets.

Americans across every state are preparing for Halloween festivities by purchasing costumes, pumpkins, and all sorts of candy. According to the National Retail Federation, 70% of Americans are expected to take part in the festivities. Of course, participating in Halloween festivities comes at a price, which is particularly high this year. When it comes to spending, Americans are expected to spend almost $9 billion for this year’s Halloween.

Halloween provides a serious boost to the American retail industry, with each person spending an average of $87 for the celebrations. Most of this spending will take place in discount stores, specialty costume stores, and department stores. Just under one fourth of Americans will be making their Halloween purchases online this year. The most common way most people celebrate Halloween is by simply handing out candy, which can be a cost-effective way to take part if you’re not too keen on going all-out on your Halloween festivities. Only 30% of Americans are expected to dress up and go trick-or-treating this year, while 45% plan to carve out a pumpkin. Pumpkin growers and dress designers aren’t the only ones who will be cashing in, as the pet costume industry will be quite busy as well.

So, if you’re looking to save money but still take part in Halloween this year, the best way might be to just purchase candy and hand it out like 70% of Americans plan to do. However, you can also support your local retailers on a budget as well be going to discount stores.
