Whole Foods is eliminating plastic straws from all of its US stores in July, as the company applies several changes.

The scrapping of plastic straws is one of the more serious changes going on at Whole Foods, but you can expect to find some new products there, too.

Whole Foods has announced that the chain will be eliminating plastic straws from all of their American, Canadian, and British locations this coming July. The company currently offers plastic straws at Allegro coffee bars, juice bars, and cafes. After July, plastic straws will be available to customers with disabilities, and all other straws will be replaced with recyclable and compostable paper straws.

Whole Foods has taken several steps to reduce their plastic consumption. Plastic straws are now being eliminated, but plastics will be facing the chopping block across all Whole Foods amenities. The company has reported that they’ve reduced the sizes of their plastic bags, and rotisserie chicken will now be placed in bags instead of hard plastic containers. The new rotisserie chicken bags will contain only 30% as much plastic as the old containers.

Whole Foods was purchased by Amazon in 2017, and like many companies has been going through several changes. Whole Foods is one of the largest grocery chains in the US, and the combined effects of the initiatives to reduce plastic consumption are expected to cut out 800,000 pounds of plastic per year.
