When Are You Getting the Second Stimulus Check?

Same song, slightly different dance.

Putting aside complaints about the actual amount included in the US Government’s second stimulus check (and I’ve got no shortage of them, I assure you), it is good that everyone is at least getting something. While the vaccines have begun making their rounds, it’s still anyone’s guess how much longer the current state of the country, and indeed, the world at large, is going to last. Even if it is just $600, that can go a long way if you use it right. But before all that, you gotta get your money first.

First, let’s recap who’s actually eligible for this thing. Unlike the checks we got in the middle of 2020, the criteria for receiving the new one is a bit narrower. If you have an annual income of $75,000 or lower, based on your most recent tax returns, you’re eligible for the whole $600. If you filed your taxes jointly with a spouse, and your combined income is $150,000 or less, you’ll both receive $600 payments for $1,200 total. Additionally, if you’ve got any dependents, specifically ones below the age of 17, you’ll receive an additional $600 a head. If your income is greater than the specified amounts, your payment will start decreasing, before eventually hitting zilch at $87,000 individually and $174,000 jointly.

If you’ve got your direct deposit information on file with the IRS, your stimulus check will be automatically deposited directly into your bank account. In this case, you may have already received your payment, so check your account. If you didn’t give the IRS your info, you’ll have to wait a few weeks for a paper check in the mail. In an additional wrinkle, some people have been reporting potential delays in receiving their payments despite providing direct deposit info. Apparently, the IRS made a booboo with those who filed their taxes last year through services like TurboTax or H&R Block, sending the payments to those agencies instead of the actual individual. If this happened to you, you’ll still get your money, but you may have to wait a few weeks for the deposit.
