‘Venom’ Opening Weekend Pulls $80 Million

During its preview screenings on Thursday, Venom turned a box office profit of $10 Million, an unprecedented profit for both preview screenings and October films. Industry experts projected a total profit for the film’s opening weekend between $50 and $60 million. Turns out they were a little off.

As of today, Monday, October 8th, Venom has turned a domestic box office profit of over $80 million. Despite tepid reviews from film critics, the film has decisively broken the record held by 2013’s Gravity for highest grossing opening weekend for an October film.

The film has also beat out one of its major competitors, Lady Gaga’s film A Star is Born, which grossed $42.6 million domestically. Experts are projecting, however, that Venom‘s success will not carry for long, due heavily to its current Rotten Tomatoes rating of 31%.
