Tough Brexit Negotiations Could Require a Costly Extension

As the date for the British exit of the European Union draws closer, the possibility of them coming to an agreement and a deal is getting slimmer. While leaders in Britain and in EU have stated that a no-deal exit would be a disaster, negotiations so far have been fairly unsuccessful. British Prime Minister Theresa May has stated her confidence in sorting out all of the details in an exit deal before the deadline.

But, she has also mentioned that they will utilize an extension if it means figuring out the deal in a way that will benefit the people of Britain who did vote for a Brexit. An official for French President Emmanuel Macron stated that they are not ruling out the possibility of an extension, although it has neither been requested nor proposed as of now. And, this kind of extension would come at a high cost to Britain, but Britain’s Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington said it would be too early to know the cost to extend a Brexit transition period, but he did reject a claim that it would cost Britain some ten million pounds to extend this transition. While it does seem to be in everyone’s best interest for a smooth exit deal, certain issues, such as UK’s Northern Ireland border with the EU’s Republic of Ireland, could force them into an extension.
