The Avengers are continuing their journey to box office success, and are now dangerously close to unseating Avatar for the title of highest-grossing movie of all time.

As of Tuesday, Avengers: Endgame is less than $200 million shy of Avatar‘s previous box office record of $2,787,965,087 worldwide.

Endgame become the second highest-grossing movie of all time over the weekend. The movie earned another $29.4 million domestically over the weekend, bringing the total domestic gross to $770.8 million. That beats Avatar‘s previous record of $760 million, although it still falls far short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which pulled $937 million domestically.

When it comes to global metrics, Endgame is doing even better, and is currently a strong contender to unseat Avatar for total worldwide gross. The Avenger’s most recent entry flew past Titanic‘s old record for 2nd place with seeming ease, and appears to now be closing in on the target of first place. Endgame‘s weekly drop has been only slightly worse than those of Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War, suggesting that Endgame still has some way to go before losing steam.

The coming summer is expected to be another big one for the film industry. There have been quite a few massive earners during the last few years, and domestic box office records have been broken repeatedly. John Wick 3 is also assassinating the box office, and setting new domestic records as well. If Endgame doesn’t run out of steam soon, it should be able to plant itself in cinema history for some time to come.
