The current trend pushing companies to save money through cuts to the workforce seems far from letting up.

Ford has announced job cuts which will affect a huge portion of their global, salaried staff.

Ford is cutting 7,000 white-collar jobs, which represents 10% of their salaried staff worldwide. The cuts come as a part of cost-cutting initiatives which are expected to save the company $600 million per year. Ford workers started to receive notifications of cuts on Tuesday, as they are expected to take place soon. The 7,000 cuts are scheduled to be completed before the end of August.

Of these 7,000 jobs being cut, approximately 2,400 are in North America. Of those 2,400 North American jobs at Ford, 1,500 jobs will be cut through a voluntary buyout offer, according to Ford. Ford has explained that these jobs cuts are intended to cut bureaucracy at the company and flatten the management structure. The company is additionally, of course, seeking to cut costs, according to CEO Jim Hackett via a letter he sent out to employees on Monday.

This move offers a strong resemblance to the white-collar job cuts announced by GM in November, though those cuts are going to go deeper than Ford’s. Ford has been conducting many cuts over the last few months in a massive effort to reshape themselves. The current plans only reflect $1 billion out of the $11 billion in restructuring that the company has dedicated itself to.
