IBM Cut 100,000 Jobs In The Last Few Years

According to Business Insider, the move was made so that IBM could come across as more “cool” in the way companies like Amazon and Google are.

IBM has cut tens of thousands of jobs in the last few years in an effort to appear more trendy and gain more business. The efforts have led to an ongoing age discrimination lawsuit, as former employees allege that their jobs were cut due to discrimination. When asked for comment, IBM told Business Insider “We have reinvented IBM in the past five years to target higher value opportunities for our clients.”

One deposition from a former IBM employee alleges that IBM is trying to show millennials that it isn’t an old, uncool organization, and that it can be cool and trendy like other big tech companies. The same report alleges that “To do that, IBM set out to slough off large portions of its older workforce using rolling layoffs over the course of several years.” IBM, for its part, has defended itself explaining that the company hires 50,000 employees every year and spends almost half a billion dollars on training. “We also receive more than 8,000 job applications every day, the highest rate that we’ve ever experienced, so there’s clear excitement about IBM’s strategy and direction for the future,” IBM said.

IBM has been a serious part of the tech community for a long time, but the company has recently been struggling against its rivals. Amazon and Google, who IBM appears to be emulating, have simply been dominating the most growth-friendly portions of the tech market.
