Jaguar Land Rover is making a serious investment into electric cars.

The company is set to start building electric cars in the UK in a move that’s great news for the British auto sector, which has recently taken a hit over Brexit uncertainty.

Britain’s largest automaker is jumping on the electric car trend with a range of electric vehicles which will be made at the company’s Castle Bromwich plant. The company will begin with the XJ luxury sedan. “The future of mobility is electric and, as a visionary British company, we are committed to making our next generation of zero-emission vehicles in the UK,” said CEO Ralf Speth on Friday. The move is being hailed by many as a much-needed boost to the British auto sector. Both Honda and Ford have already announced plans to close down plants in the UK this year.

Jaguar Land Rover has already signed a deal with workers at its Castle Bromwich facility over work time. The automaker is the UK’s largest, and it built 30% of all autos produced in the UK in 2018. The company has also chimed in on the dangers that a no-deal Brexit could have on its industry, and has highlighted the need for frictionless trade with the EU. A no-deal Brexit would cause regular customs checks at the UK’s borders with its EU neighbors, slowing down order fulfillment times significantly. The British economy has grown accustomed to fast, hassle-free customs checks in the EU, but additional bureaucracy and regular checks are expected to cause serious delays at Britain’s borders in the case of a no-deal Brexit.
