5 Apps to Help Keep Your Finances in Check

Some folks say we’re too reliant on our phones, that we let them handle too many things for us. Me, I’m the opposite; I think our phones could be putting in a little extra effort for us. I take (mostly) good care of my phone, I think it owes me that much at least. If you’re having some trouble keeping your money where you can see it, try some of these apps on your phone.

  • Stash: If you’re looking to get into the fast-paced world of investments, Stash is a good set of training wheels. It won’t directly connect with your portfolio or anything, it just offers guidance on the state of the market based on the info you feed it. You can, however, set up a debit account with Stash for quicker investing. The minimum amount to start an account is five bucks, plus a $1 monthly fee.
  • Acorns: Acorns is like Stash in that it has some investment tools, but it’s also handy if you’re just looking to save up money in general. Acorn allows you to round up your purchases and reinvest the resulting spare change. It’s like a piggy bank for the digital age, and as anyone who has ever owned a piggy bank will tell you, that small change can add up.
  • Mint: If you’re not sure where your money is going on a regular basis, Mint can help you keep everything organized and clear. Purchases are filed into a variety of categories, and the app advises you if you’re spending heavily on certain things. You can also get a free credit score estimate, no actual card required.
  • Prism: Even in the digital age, everyone seems to misplace at least one bill on a regular basis, which is not fun when they come knocking. Prism keeps all of your bills in one place for easy viewing, and when pay time is coming up, it’ll send you notifications so you don’t forget.
  • LinkedIn Job Search: If the problem is less “money” and more “lack of money,” try LinkedIn’s special job-searching app. You can search for jobs across multiple platforms based on your location and skillset. Don’t worry if you maintain a presence on LinkedIn, it’s all private.
