Money Saving Make-Ahead Meals

After a long day of work, spending all day in the kitchen is the last thing many of us want to do. That’s why this helpful tip can keep your family fed without the daily stress on your master chef skills or your budget. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your meals with batch cooking.

First, set aside one day over the weekend to cook, we won’t tell if it turns into a Project Runway marathon while your’e at it. The food you make should yield enough for about a week. Some foods that store really well and are great for batch cooking include:

  • Meats
  • Soups / Sauces
  • Casseroles
  • Veggies
  • Grains
  • Pasta

Next, freezing is usually the best way to store and extend the life of your meals. Whenever possible use freezer bags to save space, just remember to label the date on there so you can keep track of the food. If you’re not crazy about freezing entire meals, you can still pre-make certain ingredients to save money and prep time.

One last way to maximize your batch cooking is to double your recipe, so when you’re making things like soups and casseroles, make twice as much and save yourself some work down the line. Our little tip for doubling-up is go easy on the spices, save the seasoning for after your thaw your meal for a perfectly balanced flavor.
