As the legal recreational cannabis industry continues to expand, adult-use cannabis sales in Massachusetts have reached nearly $140 million as of the end of May.

Sales of the plant have continued to rise throughout the months that followed the November 2018 launch.

Massachusetts became the first east coast state to legalize recreational cannabis in November of 2018. Upon legalization, many businesses expected to strike gold from both domestic and out-of-state customers. This has indeed become the case, and the cannabis industry has taken off in every state it’s been legalized in. A similar pattern took place in Colorado, where legalization saw the legal, recreational cannabis industry grow an average of 21% month-over-month.

According to Marijuana Business Daily, the figure of $139 million in adult-use cannabis sales comes from over 3 million units of cannabis products being sold, with the average per-unit sale resting at $44. These sales were primarily sales of the cannabis flower (47%), and cannabis concentrates (34.7%). Infused edibles made up 13.9% of all sales.

Cannabis is currently legal for recreational use in 10 states, but this is expected to change in the coming years. Medicinal cannabis is currently legal with a prescription in 33 states and 4 of 5 permanently inhabited US territories.
