The pop legend that is Madonna turns 60 on August 16th and is celebrating by doing something for others rather than something for herself. In 2006 Madonna founded the Raising Malawi foundation in 2006, a charity that helps to build and advance underprivileged areas of the African nation. Madonna has adopted four children from the country and her previous endeavors with her charity has led to a children’s hospital being built in the city of Blantyre.
Now, to celebrate her 60th, Madonna has started a fundraiser for $60,000 to support the work she has already done. The fundraiser (running until her birthday on August 16) started on the 30th of July. Currently, it has already raised $10,000 and is over one-sixth the way to its goal in 24 hours.
Madonna decided to team up with Facebook for this charitable cause, allowing fans to donate directly to her Facebook page or start their own fundraising pages as well. Her goal is to provide underprivileged children with a “loving home,” a noble cause for someone who has been in the spotlight since the 1980s.
While there is little doubt that the fundraiser will garner well over its target goal, a 60k fundraiser to celebrate a 60th birthday is just one way that celebrities can use their fame and platform to help raise money for vulnerable causes such as this one.
