How Facebook Could Help Publishers Make Money

Facebook’s new cryptocurrency adventure could bring many new possibilities.

Among them is an opportunity for publishers, as the coin may offer a way for publishers to make more money through users, according to Business Insider.

The up and coming Libra could offer a way for Facebook to support publishers through the allowance of micro-payments from users. This doesn’t mean that publishers will be front and center, but there appears to be a mechanism to support them in the making. If everything goes according to plan, publishers will have a popular new channel for monetization.

Facebook has long held that news on the site should help journalists, a position which the company will likely be able to make good on. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pledged to create a new section for news on the platform, where publishers have opportunities to make money. It is easily conceivable that Libra could play the key role in facilitating transactions between users and content publishers on the social network.

While we don’t have a complete vision of what Libra will look like, we know that users browsing on Facebook can see news items, and if they show interest they can be given the option to pay for access to the publication with Libra. It is quite likely that Facebook will take a chunk of these payments similarly to how other platforms collect a cut for facilitating patronage. It is even possible that publishers will gain a new revenue stream through this mechanism should they succeed in scaling their publications.
