China Buys 300 Planes from Airbus Amid Problems at Boeing

Airbus has won a Chinese order for 300 jets as Boeing continues to struggle with the fallout of the recent Max 8 crashes.

The order was confirmed amid an official state visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he met with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

The deal did come as something of a surprise. The China Aviation Supplies Holding Company is well known for coordinating headline-grabbing deals during diplomatic visits. The company also managed to close a few other big deals in the past as well. The current deal will include a Chinese purchase of 290 A320-family jets, and 10 A-350 wide-body jets. The deal will cost China 30 billion Euros at catalog rates, but the makers of the aircraft will likely provide a discount given the size of the order. This order matches an order that took place last year for 300 Boeing planes, which was made during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing in 2017.

There was no evident connection between this Airbus deal and the problems at Boeing or the Sino-US trade war. However, China has a history of sending diplomatic symbols through state aircraft deals. “The conclusion of a big contract […] is an important step forward and an excellent signal in the current context,” Macron said about the deal.
