US Government Workers To Treat Huawei As Blacklisted

The tech war behind the current Sino-US trade war is still going strong.

A senior US official has told enforcement workers at the Commerce Department to treat China’s Huawei as blacklisted. This order has come at a confusing time, just days after President Donald Trump vowed to ease the current ban on the sale of US tech to the company.

Trump promised President Xi Jinping that he would allow US companies to resume selling to Huawei at the G20 summit on Saturday. The markets reacted to the news with enthusiasm after months of Huawei being placed on the “entity list,” which bars US companies from selling to them without special permission. The ban was enacted as a punishment for alleged actions against American national security interests.

While Trump’s vow at the G20 summit in Japan was greeted enthusiastically by US tech companies and the Chinese alike, it has caused some confusion. The Chinese and American companies that do business with Huawei are still struggling to understand exactly what policy Trump is planning to enact. This confusion has been increased as a result of the current instructions given to the US Commerce Department’s enforcement staff. It is currently unclear what additional instructions or guidance the department will pass onto their staff. The Commerce Department didn’t immediately respond to Reuter’s request for a comment.

White House adviser Peter Navarro revealed on Tuesday that the US government will allow “lower tech” chip sales to Huawei, as they wouldn’t impact US national security.
