The Global Fishing Industry Going Forward

The global fishing industry has long been a critical force in the global economy.

The industry has been faced with serious challenges in recent history, and many of these challenges are continuing to this day. However, before we can discuss the challenges facing the fishing industry, we must understand how connected the world is. If one ocean has a shortage of one particular kind of fish, the effects are often felt around the world.

SeaHarvest is one of South Africa’s largest fishing companies. While SeaHarvest is doing well for now, the broader South African fishing industry is facing serious problems. SeaHarvest specializes in catching and processing Cape Hake, one of the region’s most sought-after fish species. Their catches end up being sold as far away as Japan and Australia. While SeaHarvest is doing quite well right now, many South African Fishing firms are not having such a great time. As in many countries around the world, South Africa is currently going through some serious changes in the fishing industry. The changing regulatory scene makes it harder to navigate the waters of the fishing industry.

The fishing industry is unique because it is a labor-intensive industry no matter where you go in the world. While many industries (including fishing) are undergoing serious technological updates, fishing is still seen as an important provider of employment. Unfortunately, over-fishing is a problem that started generations ago, and continues today, affecting the industry in a very negative way. Going forward, it will be critically important that the fishing industry survives in a sustainable manner, for employment, the economy, biodiversity, the environment, and our own stomachs.
