Stock Market Reaches All-Time Highs

US stocks have hit record highs as the Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed higher than ever before.

Tuesday saw stocks reach new heights as they continued to rally from their December lows.

The S&P 500 rose to 2933.68 points while the Nasdaq rose to nearly 8121 points. Both of these figures come just over the previous records, which were 2930.75 for the S&P and 8110 for the Nasdaq as they broke previous records last September and August, respectively. Neither index beat previous record intraday highs, but observers typically measure all-time highs based on closing prices.

Stocks were pushed up on Tuesday by stronger shares in the healthcare, technology, and consumer goods sectors. The top performers of the day were Twitter (TWTR), Hasbro (HAS), and Quest Diagnostics (DGX). The ultimate takeaway is a strong American consumer, according to Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda.

In December, stocks faced high volatility and demonstrated some of the worst single-day drops in history. The S&P and Dow closed for their worst Christmas Eves in history as well. Since then, stocks have shot back up with a vengeance, as the S&P has since risen 25% and the Nasdaq has risen more than 30%.
