New York Times To Increase Prices

The New York Times is now planning to test price increases on digital subscriptions as they hope to pass the 10 million subscriber mark by 2025. The publication, which is considered one of the most successful pay-walled publications, had a rather good 2018 and is now seeking to expand.

The New York Times ended 2018 with 4.3 million subscribers, 3.4 million of which are digital subscribers. Q4 saw 265,000 new subscriptions come in, which the publication reports is the biggest increase since the 2016 presidential election. The 2016 election saw many news outlets and publications receive a boost in viewership and subscriptions which was dubbed the “Trump Bump.”

The increase in subscriptions to the New York Times has not been perfectly ideal, however. The publication aggressively promoted a $1 per week package for digital subscriptions, while the normal price is $3.75 per week. To make up for this, the times hopes to increase prices and increase the number of subscribers to more expensive packages. To meet that end, they plan to add more services to their subscription packages and market their more expensive offers.
