Box Office Breakdown: Crazy Rich Earnings

Another week gone by, another week where a movie makes box office history in the U.S. This past weekend, Crazy Rich Asians took the top spot at Number 1, pulling in a majorly impressive $26.5 million, a high number for a romantic comedy. It’s the first of its genre to gain this much money from a 3-day opening weekend in three years.

Not only that, but its the first Hollywood film to be produced with an all-Asian cast in 25 years. It’s a big break when an American movie decides to dive into the culture of Singaporeans, but the U.S. was craving something new and Hollywood delivered successfully. It’s also the biggest opening of any comedy from this year to date.

Coming in at number 2 this week, the shark story of The Meg took another huge bite, raking in just over 21 million. This is just another reminder that action films are the highlight of Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean that a rom-com can’t take a sweep for a weekend.

While the money is the main topic of this article, I personally hope that diversity is increased in Hollywood, and more films come to light that tell stories of other cultures in unique and hilarious ways.
