Almost 90 companies from a variety of industries have come together to pledge a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The pledge comes just ahead of the biggest climate week in the world, Climate Week NYC. The 87 companies were brought together by a nonprofit coalition that works with businesses to help them take appropriate actions to fight climate change. All of the companies have agreed to set climate targets so they can limit the global temperature rise to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels. They also agreed to aim for net-zero emissions by 2050.

The nonprofit coalition released a statement explaining that this massive corporate pledge comes ahead of several major climate action initiatives. The pledge comes ahead of Climate Week NYC and the “milestone Climate Action Summit” hosted by the United Nations secretary general. The United Nations summit aims to provide a forum for governments and businesses to share plans to reduce emissions.

A United Nations report released in August warned of “catastrophic consequences” should climate change warm the planet by more than 2.7 degrees. A United Nations press release from the secretary general said that it’s “encouraging” to see so many private sector companies “stepping up in support of a [2.7 degree Fahrenheit] future.” The companies that have climbed on board are headquartered in 27 different countries, representing 4.2 million employees across 28 sectors. These companies currently produce the combined annual direct emissions of 73 coal power plants.
