Most homes are under-insured. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, there are a few important things you can do to make sure you’re properly covered.

While being “under-insured” is subjective, there are a few worrying things to keep in mind when you consider your home insurance. First of all, if you don’t check, you won’t know if you’re under-insured until its too late. While 85% of American homeowners have home insurance, almost half of them don’t even know what their home insurance policy covers, according to a ValuePenguin survey. According to the survey, only one in ten consumers compared prices when shopping around for a policy, and 34% of respondents believed their policy covers flooding, but this is seldom the case. The main takeaway is that many homeowners are overpaying for insurance and not adequately covered.

There are a few things you can do to make sure you get better home insurance. First, try to make sure you are adequately covered for your personal items, and update your policy for your personal property inventory if necessary. Make sure your coverage gets you the replacement value of your home. Also, make sure you’re covered for the events that are most likely to affect you. Being properly insured can often go well beyond a standard homeowners insurance policy. In fact, a standard homeowners insurance policy won’t even protect you in the case of a flood. To get coverage for a flood, you must go to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurance company that works with the NFIP. It might be best to read your policy the next moment you have a chance.
