Senegal has started importing wind turbines to build the country’s first large-scale wind farm.

Senegal’s newest energy project is expected to grow to become the largest wind farm in West Africa. The new farm is also expected to produce almost one sixth of the country’s energy in the near future. The wind farm will be located about 100 kilometers from the nation’s capital, Dakar. According to British-owned renewable energy company Lekela, the wind farm is expected to produce 158.7 megawatts by 2020.

Senegalese President Macky Sall has stated Senegal’s intention to become a leader in renewable energy in Africa. He’s set the ambitious goal of having renewables account for 30% of the country’s energy within the coming years. This new wind farm is expected to take the country halfway to that goal. A smaller solar project is also underway, which is set to produce another 30 megawatts towards the goal.

The new farm will be half financed by Lekela, with the other half being financed by Overseas Private Investment Corp, an American company, and EKF, a Danish export credit company.

At the moment, renewable energy sources only make up a small portion of Africa’s energy production. However, several ambitious projects across the continent may soon change that. Right now, Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa are also building their own wind farms.
