The Average American Spends Over $164 A Day! Let’s Break That Number Down

According to a new study, the average American spends $164.55 per day.

Of course that figure averages out all age groups and other relevant metrics, but you may be surprised to see who is spending more. In an economy where jobs are plentiful and incomes are high, but where most people are struggling with debt and have no savings, it is important to evaluate our own spending habits. If you spend even as much as $100 per day, you need a salary of at least $35,000 (after deductions) to keep any savings at all.

The study in question was conducted by GoBankingRates and covered BLS data from 2017. The spending data covers all forms of spending including essentials and entertainment. Housing is the single largest expense, with the average American spending $32 per day on their housing. Alcohol was the lowest expense, with the average American spending just $1.53 per day.

When you break down the age groups, people under 25 are actually the most frugal spenders, spending an average of $92 per day. However, 25-34 year-olds spend more than $208 per day on average. When it comes to education, 45-54 year-olds spend the most at $8.80 per day.
