The fines come amid allegations of over 1000 child labor law violations in Massachusetts.

Qdoba, the popular Mexican-style fast food chain, is currently facing fines totaling over $400,000. 22 corporate-owned Massachusetts locations have been cited for a total of $409,400 in penalties. This massive set of fines comes one year after Attorney General Maura Healey’s office received a complaint from a minor who was found to be working at a Qdoba location. The minor reportedly said she had been working late into the night at a Qdoba location in Newton, MA. Following this complaint, Healey’s office launched an investigation into the fast food chain.

After the company’s records were reviewed, it was revealed that minors were regularly working for the fast food chain, in violation of child labor laws, according to Healey’s office. A full audit of all of the company’s Massachusetts locations revealed thousands of violations. Violations included minors working too late into the evening and working too many hours on a single shift. Under Massachusetts state law, minors (those under 18) cannot work for more than 9 hours per day or 48 hours per week. Investigators from the Attorney General’s office noted just under 200 instances where a minor worked more than 11 hours during a single shift. Hundreds of other specific violations were also found to have taken place. Each citation carries a $250 fine, the maximum penalty for first-time offenses against the child labor statute.
