Leaked documents have exposed Africa’s richest woman, Isabel dos Santos, for gaining her wealth through corruption and exploitation.
The documents reveal how Ms. dos Santos, daughter to the former president of Angola, had access valuable state assets and how she could buy them. She had a hand in deals in natural resources and state assets during her father’s presidency. Recently leaked documents revealed the details of how she and her husband were able to buy state assets through suspicious deals. Over 700,000 documents detaining Ms. dos Santos’ business dealing are now available to the press.
Ms. dos Santos’ Angolan assets have been frozen and she is currently under criminal investigation. The head of Corruption Watch, Andrew Feinstein, has said that the leaked documents reveal exploitation of Angola’s assets and resources at the expense of ordinary Angolan citizens. “Every time she appears on the cover of some glossy magazine somewhere in the world, every time that she hosts one of her glamorous parties in the south of France, she is doing so by trampling on the aspirations of the citizens of Angola,” Feinstein said.
Ms. dos Santos, for her part, denies all of the claims against her. She alleges that the allegations against her are a part of a witch hunt by the current Angolan government. Ms. dos Santos currently lives in the UK.
