The colonel will be meeting with the minds behind the alternative meat items now offered at Burger King and Del Taco.

The company hasn’t quite jumped aboard the vegan wagon yet, but we might soon find out what chicken-less KFC tastes like.

KFC will be meeting with several plant-based “meat” producers to discuss options regarding what vegan fried chicken would look like on paper and in practice. Several large chains including Burger King, Del Taco, and Tim Hortons have already added vegan meat substitutes onto their menus in recent months. The meatless meat trend has not spread to the world of chicken just yet, as KFC and other chains like Chick-fil-A have sat on the sidelines and watched for the most part. Chick-fil-A, for their part, has already started looking into vegan options to add to their menus.

The trend of chicken-less chicken was once never thought possible. “If you would have asked me six months ago, I would have said no, to be completely honest with you,” said KFC’s US President Kevin Hochman. Despite this, the current hot trend has taken the food world by storm, and even KFC cannot ignore it. While Arby’s has dedicated itself to maintaining a meat-lovers brand, it would appear that KFC is at least curious when it comes to vegan menu items using meat alternatives.
