Walmart Settling $65 Million Lawsuit Over Cashier Seating

Department store chain Walmart has been embroiled in a nine-year lawsuit regarding its cashiers right to regular seating in the state of California. Cashiers have accused the retailer of violating a California state law that requires seating for employees when the work reasonably permits it.

On October 11th, Walmart officially agreed to pay out a settlement of $65 million to over 100,000 current and former cashiers of Walmart. According to California state law, workers can sue on behalf of the state and keep a quarter of any settlement money, which will be divided among the affected parties. Walmart has claimed that stools at cash registers could be a safety hazard and reduce employee productivity. They believed that the nature of work would not permit seating, as cashiers need to regularly move, stretch, and step away from the register.

Regardless, once the settlement has been approved by a federal judge, Walmart will begin offering stools to all cashiers in California.
