Walmart Has Two Tweaks to Save $200 Million

Walmart is planning to roll out two small changes to their stores that could end up saving them over $200 million in the long run. Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs announced to analysts that Walmart will be switching out the florescent lights in the stores and their parking lots for white LEDs. These lights consume less energy while still providing optimal lighting, saving Walmart at least $200 million in energy costs while also reducing their environmental impact.

The other change is a much simpler one: floor wax. Namely, a different brand of floor wax from the one the stores typically use. According to Biggs, this new brand is not only cheaper, it is also sturdier, requiring less frequent reapplication. This change is projected to save Walmart another $20 million.

These savings are welcome projections considering Walmart’s recent earnings outlook reduction after a less-than-profitable acquisition of Indian e-commerce company Flipkart.
