Borrow whole outfits for 88 bucks a month.

Urban Outfitters announced the addition of a clothing rental service on Tuesday. The new service will allow customers to subscribe to Nuuly to pay $88 per month to rent up to $800 worth of merchandise. The service will be made available to subscribers later in the Summer and will allow customers to rent a combined six items valued at under $800. Customers can rent and wear clothing that is valued under this stated limit, and return the clothing when they are done or want to swap it for something else. Of course, renters can buy the clothes that they try out and like, but it’s currently unclear whether or not these clothes will be discounted.

Nuuly is expected to stock up on over 1000 clothing items leading up to the launch, at which point all Nuuly subscribers can start renting clothes. A press release from Urban Outfitters explains Nuuly as a solution to “the paradox of a millennial’s quest for constant fashion newness alongside the desire for a more sustainable lifestyle.”

The shift/venture into rental clothing could end up helping Urban Outfitters greatly. Like most brick-&-mortar retailers, Urban Outfitters has been struggling recently. This wouldn’t be the first clothing rental service, as Rent the Runway hit a billion dollar valuation earlier this year. Should Urban Outfitters succeed with Nuuly, it would certainly help push the concept of rental clothing into the mainstream.
