Uber Eats to Begin Using Drones for Delivery

Uber Eats is already a pretty convenient service, allowing you to pay Uber drivers to grab food for you from restaurants that normally don’t deliver, or only deliver to certain addresses. However, Uber has a plan in the works to cut the drivers out of the equation almost entirely, with flying drones as the linchpin.

The Wall Street Journal spotted a job listing for a drone operations manager on Uber’s website. This listing was for a new Uber sub-brand titled “Uber Express,” and requested someone who could quickly and safely scramble drones to fulfill food orders. The listing has since been taken down, but this isn’t the first time Uber has entertained the idea of drones. Back in May, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi mentioned that the best way to circumvent urban mobility is through flight, and that we needed, in his own words, “flying burgers.” When The Wall Street Journal pressed Uber for a comment about the job listing, an executive told them it was taken down because it “does not fully reflect our program, which is still in very early days.”

Uber announced its first intent to work with drones ahead of its upcoming 2019 IPO in order to diversify from their main ride-sharing service. Based on the removed listing, they are hoping to begin Uber Express as a service by 2021.
