Uber Drivers Go On Strike

Bad timing for Uber, even worse for Lyft.

Drivers at both Uber and Lyft are now set for a massive strike. These strikes are expected to take place in several American cities throughout the day on Wednesday.

The strikes come just ahead of Uber’s highly-anticipated IPO. The strikes are planned for different times of the day, while some of these cities are set for an all-day strike. The primary purposes of the strike are better working conditions and increased pay. The employment status of Uber drivers has been a contentious issue for years now, and it has landed Uber in hot water before. The specific demands being put forward do vary by location. Drivers in New York City are demanding that Uber guarantee them 80-85% of ride proceeds, for example.

Whether or not any of this action will improve the situation Uber drivers face is unknown. Neither Uber nor their competitor Lyft are currently profitable, as both of them actually lose money on every ride. A press release revealed that executives at Uber and Lyft believe that they pay their drivers too much already. Wall Street seems to be on the side of the executives, and follow the belief that Uber and Lyft need to work on cutting expenses, primarily driver incomes, while moving towards driver-less cars more quickly.
