This 1979 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Is A Fossil

At the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, there are several cool automaker displays. Senior Editor John Snyder takes us on a quick walk around one of them. This 1979 Mercedes–Benz G-Class is made to look like a fossil.

Resembling an insect encased in amber and fossilized, this car was on display outside the venue. The 44.4 tons of synthetic resin has been on display at the entrance of Cobo Hall, where the auto show is held, in downtown Detroit. The installation symbolizes “the timelessness of the off-road legend and makes a conscious reference to the natural phenomenon of insects preserved in amber,” Mercedes says. The gigantic cube was created over 90 days. The square block is 18 feet long, more than 8 feet wide, and 10 feet high. Its new G-Class was unveiled at the show, where the company even hired Arnold Schwarzenegger to appear at the event. Additionally, the car was surrounded by plumes of fire to set the stage for its big reveal.

To make the car look rugged, an artist   applied fake mud to a Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle to enhance its rugged vibe. Held at the Cobo Center in Detroit, construction for the event began back in November. Construction workers and laborers turn 700,000 square feet of open space into a show room for various auto makers from around the globe to display more than 750 vehicles.
