The Right Way To Take Your Kids Shopping

Shopping is stressful enough as is. Comparing deals, trying on clothes, making sure you’re actually going to use what you buy. Sometimes, its such a hassle that parents opt out of shopping in stores nowadays and just order everything they need online. But what happens when you’re forced to bring your kid out shopping with you? Here are some great tips for keeping the kids calm while you shop and making sure you both get the experience, and savings, that you need.

Encourage Your Kids To Choose
Children love feeling nurtured and empowered. Let them help make the choices when you shop, rather than letting them sit quietly or follow you around helplessly. Ask for opinions on brands, or have them pick out their own clothing. Additionally, if you have to explain why something can’t be purchased, make sure to give them a clear answer, rather than just abruptly saying “no!”

Ask For Their Opinion
If you’re out clothes shopping, let them give you their opinion on what you’re trying on. You could even have them pick an outfit out for you, even if its hideous. The kids will have a lot more enjoyment and will complain way less if you give them creative power while at the store.

Thank Them For Their Help
Even if they did absolutely nothing, reinforce that the shopping trip would have not been as successful if it weren’t for them. Don’t give in to the notion that they deserve a toy or snack every time they go out with you. Instead, try exciting them by saying “I can’t wait for dinner so we can cook the meal you chose.” It’s simple phrases like this that can make a child less whiny and more excited to go shopping, even if they feel like their being mindlessly dragged along.
