The Pay Gap by Gender in Major American Cities

When it comes to the gender pay gap, not all American cities are equal.

While most cities do tend to follow the national trends, some cities are more equal than others when it comes to gender. The reasons for this vary on a case-by-case basis, but some trends are noticeable. It should be noted that the study in question compares “the median annual earnings of men and women working full time, year-round.”

Coming in at the top, Los Angeles is the most gender-equal city in the US. The overall gender pay ratio is 91% in LA, which translates to $4600 more for the average man when compared to the average woman. LA is thus the American city that has come the closest to income equality between men and women. At the bottom of the list, Detroit has a gender pay ratio of 75%. The average full-time male worker makes $14700 more than their female counterpart.
