The French Law That Keeps Netflix Out of Cannes

Despite ongoing talks, Netflix will not have any of its movies featured at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

While negotiations continue, Netflix will be missing this year’s festival for sure.

Netflix cannot have its movies featured at the Cannes Film Festival due to a French law which doesn’t allow films to be featured at the festival unless it was set for release inside French theaters. This one rule disqualifies many movies that would’ve otherwise been destined for a place in Cannes. Netflix has held its ground as an outsider in the movie industry. The company has won multiple Oscars for Roma, proving that the streaming superpower can compete with the Hollywood establishment and other leaders in the international film scene.

Negotiations between Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival have been friendly and cordial. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber even met with the festival’s artistic director Thierry Fremaux for a dinner in Los Angeles last week. While negotiations will continue, the case right now seems to be another setback for Netflix’s journey into the film world.
