Take This Spring To Clean Up Your Finances

Grab the mop and tie a kerchief over your head, it’s time to clean up.

If you’ve followed recent studies on the state of the average American’s financial situation, then you are aware that most Americans are in trouble. That being said, you don’t need to be like them at all. So, here are a few things you can do this Spring to improve your financial situation.

First, you need to set the time aside. Right now you may have spring break, but any time you have free is good. It takes time to tackle your finances. Beyond that, try taking these steps:

  1. Create a budget. If you don’t create a budget, you will often spend more money then you planned to. Make note of all income and expenses, and try to find weak points where you can improve.
  2. Catch up on your past bills. The longer you leave your bills, the worse your situation will become. We are trying to work towards being debt-free and financially liberated, so the first step is being up-to-date with expenses. Don’t pay extra interest or penalties.
  3. Start saving and look into the future. The biggest fear regarding retirement is running out of money before you run out of life. It’s a well-warranted fear, so it’s best to avoid going broke halfway through retirement by planning and saving well in advance. People are living longer these days, but retirement planning is far less common than it once was. Don’t be a part of this dumb trend.
  4. Update your beneficiaries. It may sound morbid, especially if you’re young and healthy, but keep in mind that your situation with your chosen beneficiaries may change in time.
  5. Take out the trash and go digital. Don’t let paper and cardboard boxes pile up. Make sure you hold onto any tax or other serious documents for at least seven years. Beyond that, everything can now be done digitally, saving you time and space.
