Stratolaunch Launches the Biggest Plane on Earth

This thing looks like it should be carrying giant robots.

The largest plane planet Earth has ever seen has taken flight in California from the Mojave Air & Space Port.

Stratolaunch’s massive new jet was designed to launch satellites and rockets into space. The six-engine aircraft currently holds the world’s longest wing-span at 117 meters. The behemoth of a plane took off at 7:00 am on Saturday and climbed to the sky 112 kilometers north of Los Angeles. The idea of such a test is to work towards the plane being able to carry three rockets with satellites attached. Once the plane reaches an altitude of 10,668 meters, the attached rockets would ignite their engines and launch the satellites into outer space.

This project has brought to life a long-time dream of Microsoft’s late co-founder Paul G. Allen. The plane could change the entire game in the aerospace industry. A vehicle like this could use numerous airports and not be limited to fixed launch sites. This could free up so much time and space for the future of satellites and space exploration. It also helps to avoid the limitations placed on fixed launch sites, such as weather conditions, as well as air and ship traffic.
