Rome Has Found An Interesting Potential Revenue Source

A Penny For Your Thoughts

What happens to the wish you made while throwing a coin into a fountain if it’s used for a cash-strapped city government? Well, that’s what people of Rome and tourists alike are looking at in the Eternal City. The Trevi Fountain is one of the more well-known tourist attractions in Rome, and boasts as one of the most popular fountains in the world. So it’s not shocking that the fountain rakes in over $1.2 million worth of coins every year.

What do these coins have to do with Rome itself? The city is thinking of using that extra money as a revenue flow. Normally, those coins would go to a catholic charity. Who couldn’t use an extra $1.2 million? For a city that has nearly $15.8 billion in debt, those coins could put a small dent in that behemoth number.

Romes mayor was the one who coined this idea. Other ideas for raising money include fines at different tourist attractions around the city for not obeying the said rules.
