Netflix Testing Half-Price Mobile-Only Subscription

In an effort to widen appeal to Asian and emerging markets, streaming service Netflix has launched a new experimental subscription plan. This new plan has half the price, but also half the features.

The experimental plan, simply dubbed “Mobile,” allows users unlimited access to Netflix for only $4 (or regional currency equivalent) per month. This is about half the cost of the next plan up, “Basic,” which costs $7.99. The obvious catch is that, on this plan, only mobile devices like phones and tablets can be used to stream Netflix content. The plan is currently running on a trial basis in Asian territories, starting with Malaysia. Netflix offhandedly revealed that the trial is running in a few other countries, but did not mention which ones specifically. Many streaming services in Asian territories, such as HOOQ, iFlix, and Viu, do utilize more aggressive pricing, so this plan could serve as a good foothold for Netflix.

In addition to the plan, Netflix is also currently workshopping content tailored specifically to Asian territories. Netflix has already greenlit eight new original movies and one new show intended for India specifically.
