Mega Millions and Powerball Reach Nearly $1 Billion

A winner of either Mega Millions or Powerball this week could set a record for the largest jackpot in the history of either lottery. Mega Millions’ current jackpot is $654 million, with a $372.6 million cash payout option available since the Mega Ball was not claimed during last Friday’s drawing. The Powerball’s current jackpot sits at a smaller, but no less respectable, $345 million. If one person were to win both jackpots, they would receive a grand total of $999 million, a stone’s throw from an even billion dollars.

The Mega Millions jackpot record currently sits at $656 million, only two million more than the current one, and was won back in 2012 by several winning ticket holders around the country. Since that prize had to be shared among multiple winners, if a single ticket wins this time, it will break the record for highest payout. Powerball’s record will not be broken so easily, as it sits at $758.7 million won in 2017 by a single person in Massachusetts. If no winners claim the prize this week, however, it will continue to roll over into the next jackpot, which could lead into a notable increase in a short time.
